Trouble Doll Series

This series of watercolors has it’s basis in the recent rekindling of my love for these tiny folk art creations from Guatemala, known as trouble, or worry dolls (muñecas quitapenas). I have been looking at folk art from other cultures even more than usual lately, and remembered that my two daughters were recently given a set of trouble dolls by my sister, who, along with myself, also cherished these as a child.

Perhaps because it has been so grey and gloomy here for so many months, I’ve been immersing myself in the vibrant colors used in the dolls creations and my watercolors. It's also a complete joy to be literally cracking myself up when I paint their little troubled faces and their hair, probably the best part of creating these watercolors. . . an exercise in defeating worries and the dull-dom of winter!

Original watercolors from this Trouble Doll series are available on the Tulip Tree Etsy shop. No prints will be made from this series as my intention is to make each trouble doll a unique individual, just as no two human beings are alike, and to keep them that way they will be sold only as originals.

Because this series was inspired by the art of another culture, I will be donating 10% of profits of each sale from this series to Oxfam America in an attempt to give a little something back in return for the inspiration.
